 Do you know that tuataras can live up to 300 years?

Nina Ferguson —

This is one of the interesting facts we discovered when Janet from Willowbank shared with us her knowledge about kiwis and tuataras.

We began our latest inquiry with a visit from Willowbank to learn more about some unique animals to New Zealand.  We were also able to touch and look at examples of a kiwi egg, stoats, ferrets, kiwi feathers and a live tuatara. It was fascinating and made us realize how special these animals are.

The next day, we focused on our learner profile “I am knowledgable” and worked in teams to draw a kiwi or tuatara and record some of the facts we learnt...

  • kiwis can’t fly because they have heavy bones and their feathers are open instead of closed;
  • tuataras have 3 eyes but after 3 years the third eye is covered by scales and is no longer used

We are looking forward to our excursion next week to a local habitat to discover different ways we can protect animals.

Transdisciplinary theme: "How we share the planet".

Central idea: We are responsible for protecting animals and their habitats.
