BMXNZ South Island Titles 2018

Christina Freeman —

Blake S and Juliet F participated in the BMXNZ South Island Titles event on the weekend 13-14 January 2018.

This was held at the Christchurch City BMX Club track in Hornby in conjunction with the BMXNZ Elite National Championships. The Elite Championships proved to be a real bonus for the younger riders, watching New Zealand’s best battle it out for National Championship honours was exciting.

After some extremely foul weather in the lead up to the event, that saw racing postponed and leaf blowers, heaters and a helicopter deployed to help dry out the track, racing finally got underway late on Saturday afternoon. There was some very close and fantastic racing across all age groups.

Blake S raced in the 12 Boys category with 28 other riders from all around the country. Blake got some super gate starts, railed his corners and held some strong race lines to come in 25th overall. Blake also represented the Mainland North Region, racing with the test team for the Mainland North vs Mainland South Region cup. His gutsy riding added valuable points to the Mainland North Region team score over the weekend seeing them take out the trophy. Well done Blake!!

Juliet F raced in the 11 girls category with 7 other riders also from all over New Zealand. Juliet pushed hard over the two days with some great gate starts and bold race lines in an attempt to catch the leaders and finished the weekend with a credible 4th place. Great effort Juliet!!

In the true Mt Pleasant School spirit, Blake and Juliet showed some admirable courage, determination and sportsmanship out on the track at South Island Titles. Most importantly, the smiles on and off the track showed they are out there doing it for all the right reasons. Way to go Mt Pleasant BMX team. :o)
