Koru Games 2016

Jeremy Griffiths —

The Koru Games is a multi-day, multi-sport tournament offered to year 7 & 8 students. Check out how we went...

This year we made the decision to enter Mt. Pleasant School into the Koru Games, which is a multi-day, multi-sport tournament offered to year 7 & 8 students. There were over 2000 students competing this year across the three days and throughout the 10 different sports on offer.

We chose to test-drive the sport of touch and so we entered both a boys and girls team. The touch tournament was held at the Rolleston RFC and Reserve and saw a good selection of sides from around the wider Canterbury region and even a side from Dunedin.

The boys side enjoyed plenty of success with wins against South Brighton, Rawhiti, Clearview, Rolleston, Weedons and Belfast.  After managing to beat Belfast in an absolutely thrilling semi-final we were to meet the very well-drilled St. Thomas side in the grand-final. Unfortunately, they were simply too good and deserved the title.

The girls side had a considerably tougher draw and came up against several experienced and well organised sides. They grew more knowledgeable and skilled as the tournament wore on and enjoyed good success. The wonderful win over Burnham was an obvious highlight, however, the team played well and were unlucky not to have come away with a few more wins.

I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the wonderful parents, family and friends that assisted across the tournament with transport and for supervising throughout the days.

Overall, it was a great experience for the players and one that challenged them both physically and mentally.
