Principal's Message, Friday 15 May, 2020

Daniel Wilson —

Adjusting to our new normal.

Dear parents/caregivers

Staff have been working hard over the past two days getting the school grounds, classrooms and learning programmes ready to resume school under Covid Alert Level 2 next week. Please read the following message carefully as there has been some more information added recently:

Return to school

Monday 18 May
Year 11-13 students return for a special six period day.  Please report to tutor class at 8.50am. Junior students that have been attending under Alert Level 3 are able to continue their distance learning in the library.

Tuesday 19 May
All students return to school.  Please report to tutor class at 8.50am.

Increased hygiene practices

The following practices must be adhered to by staff and students:

  • Students will be required to sanitise or wash hands upon entering a classroom and before using school equipment. We encourage students to bring their own hand sanitiser to school.
  • Students should not touch or breathe on others. Give each other space and stay out of each other's 'moist breath zone.'
  • Assemblies will not run initially but may resume in future weeks. The timetable on a Tuesday will be the same as a Monday (with tutor class after Period 1).
  • Drinking fountains can only be used to fill bottles. Please ensure you bring a drink bottle to school.
  • Please make sure you bring and only use your own stationery.
  • The Kuaka Café will have strict rules regarding entering and leaving the building – see attached image. The hot water dispensers and microwaves are not available during Alert Level 2 so please do not bring food that requires reheating or hot water.
  • The library computer suite is out of bounds during lunchtime and interval at this stage.
  • Spitting will be dealt with at the highest level. Gum is not to be chewed at school.

Bus Services

Please read this message carefully if your child uses a commercial bus service to attend school. You will need to register your child before they can use the bus services at Alert Level 2.

Attendance

We are advised by the Ministry of Education that it is now safe for students to return to school.  However, we are aware that some students may be concerned that they fit into the 'vulnerable' category for Covid-19. If you are unsure of whether your child should be attending school, our advice is for you to contact your family doctor for guidance.

If you do make the decision to continue self-isolation, please ensure you email away@nayland.school.nz with the following information:

  • Full name and year level of student
  • Reason for self isolation
  • Name of GP

Our school nurse will work with families and where possible our intention is to dispel concerns in order for the child to return to school.

Illness

If your child is unwell, please do not send them to school. Please email away@nayland.school.nz or phone the school on 03 547 9769 and press '1' to leave a message on our attendance line.

Leaving school grounds

  • Students will not be able to leave the school grounds during the day unless they are sick or have a pre-scheduled appointment, in which case they must sign out at the Student Centre. This includes Year 13 students and students that usually have a lunch pass. Senior students are still permitted to leave early P5 on Fridays.
  • Year 13 students - we suggest they use any study periods to catch up on work, however if they have a study period P5, they may leave the school grounds provided they sign out first.  If they have a study period P1 then they are able to work from home, provided they please sign in when they arrive.
  • If students use the crossing on Nayland Road, please encourage them to be aware that they represent the school and are highly visible to the community. It is important that we are all adhering to Ministry of Health guidelines regarding physical distancing.
  • Students are not to enter the Broadgreen Intermediate or Nayland Primary School grounds for contact tracing reasons.
  • All visitors to the school must sign in and provide a current address and phone number.
  • Parents please do not enter the school site to drop off or collect students.

Laptops

If you were issued with a Nayland College laptop or have received a laptop from the Ministry of Education, this should have now been returned. Failure to return the device to the library by Friday 22 May may result in you being charged for this item. We do need these devices for our classrooms so would appreciate your support in assisting us to recover these.

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you all back at school in perfect uniform next week.
