Notice of rolling strikes

Daniel Wilson - Principal —

Dear parents and caregivers,

On Wednesday 29th the NZ PPTA, the union that represents the vast majority of secondary teachers, called their members out on strike. This lead to Nayland College being unable to provide classes as usual for that day.

It was hoped that this action would be the last and that a resolution between the Ministry of Education and PPTA would be reached, or at least enough progress made to postpone more action. As of this morning this has not happened and we have been informed that the next PPTA action, PPTA members being directed not to teach year 9 students on Tuesday 4th June, will go ahead as planned.

This means that no Year 9 classes will run on Tuesday 4th of June. Nayland College does not have sufficient non-PPTA members and relievers to cover the absence of PPTA members. Therefore we would ask you to keep Year 9 students home on Tuesday.

There are plans for further industrial action but I remain hopeful that progress can be made and further action will not be seen as necessary.

At this stage the PPTA have notified of the following potential strike action:

  • Tuesday 11 June 2019  - the nature of this action will be a continuous withdrawal of all labour related to Year 10 students for the duration of the strike on the day.
  • Tuesday 25 June 2019 - the nature of this action will be a continuous withdrawal of all labour related to Year 11 students for the duration of the strike on the day.
  • Tuesday 2 July 2019 - he nature of this action will be a continuous withdrawal of all labour related to Year 12 students for the duration of the strike on the day.

This situation is very fluid and changeable and I will update you via e-mail and the Nayland College facebook page, if any new information becomes available.

Thank you for your support in this matter.

Nga mihi

Daniel Wilson
