Westport Surf Camp

Nathan Gargiulo —

Earlier this term, the two Year 10 ‘Surf’s Up’ module classes travelled to Westport for an overnight surf camp.

The surf camp provided an opportunity for students to finally experience surfing and put into practise some of the knowledge and skills that we have been learning about in class.

We arrived in Westport around lunchtime and headed to Bazil’s Surf School to get our wetsuits fitted. Steve, our surf instructor decided to take us to Tiphead surf spot as there was apparently some nice, clean waves coming in and the sun was shining.

As we headed down to the beach we caught our first glimpses of the 2ft, glassy waves, perfect for learning on. Fun was had by all in the water, as students navigated trying to stand up and ride the waves to the shoreline. Mr Prebble shredded all afternoon, dominating the line up.

After dinner, we headed back down to Tiphead and had a bonfire on the beach. This gave everyone the opportunity to tell stories about the huge barrels caught in the afternoon.

The following morning we walked out to the seal colony at Tauranga Bay before heading back to Nayland College.

Here are some reflections about the camp from some of our students:

“It was rad” – Hunter McLeod

“Would recommend” – Jess Smith

“Sick barrels” – Verdon McDonald

A big thank you to Mrs Jacqueline de Jong for joining as on the camp.
