Seasprite pays a flying visit

Nayland College Official —

An out-of-the-ordinary visitor arrived on the top field at the beginning of lunchtime yesterday, the 12th of September.

The unusual guest was a Defence Force Sea Sprite helicopter, along with Defence Force staff.  They made the visit to give Nayland students the chance to see a landing up close and to ask staff questions.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has flown Seasprite helicopters since 1998.  They fulfill a number of roles including combat, surveillance, transport, replenishment, and reconnaissance for Navy ships.

The Nayland 'mission' was led by Chief Petty Officer Roy Wattie who's made two previous visits to the college.  The smooth running of the visit was made possible by a group local students who are also cadets, as well as some students who had just returned from their Whenua Iti Uniform Services course.  These students donned their uniforms and helped to secure the area and direct students to a safe viewing spot for the landing.

Gateway, Pathway Plus and Trades Academy teacher Alana Wall said she leaped at the chance to have the visit and immediately thought of extending the invitation to Broadgreen Intermediate.  "I thought it would be a shame not to spread the love!" she said.
