Shark Spy!
Ten Nayland College students had the opportunity to take part in a citizen science project last Saturday.
Shark Spy is a field-based science programme running out of the NZ Marine Studies Centre in Dunedin, that engages with schools throughout Aotearoa to collect information on sharks around the country.
On board the vessel, students took part in dropping and retrieving baited video cameras, recording environmental conditions, and observing the small things living in our ocean from a plankton draw.
Back on dry land a few days later, students were able to work through data analysis of the video footage to see what was observed. Students were able to take part in each step of the scientific method, introducing them to the exciting world of field science!
