Friday Five Questions

Nayland College Official —

This Friday we talk to head of textiles technology Cushla Laufkotter.

How long have you been teaching and how long you been at Nayland College?

I have been teaching for 15 years, the last 14 of those being here at Nayland College. I've had a few years off in between on maternity leave and a year travelling overseas.

What are your passions and areas of expertise?

I teach textiles technology, and have always had a passion for fashion design. This goes way back to when I used to hand-sew clothes for my Barbie with Mum's fabric off-cuts.

More and more we are focusing on sustainable design and the students are really invested in making positive changes.

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey?

My amazing friend and past colleague Annie McCreary has been the biggest influence on the development of my teaching craft. But more than that - she is an inspirational person.

What is your favorite thing about the school?

Everyday I get to have interactions with talented young people; I learn as much from them as they do from me, and they inspire much of the work we do.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I don't like to plan too far ahead. For the next few years balancing work with raising my wee family is more than enough to keep me busy!
