Nayland's big win at Big Sing

Ysabella Abel (Student Journalist) —

Last Thursday, Nayland's Mixed Choir, 'NayCol Chorale' and Girls' Choir, 'Sotto Voce' received outstanding results after attending the regional Big Sing competition held in Blenheim.

Students got up early to take the bus over to Blenheim where they competed in a competition during the day. Each choir performed three songs which they were then judged on. In the evening, a gala concert was held where each choir picked their favourite two songs to perform for the public. At the end of the gala concert, the results were announced as follows:

· Both Sotto Voce and NayCol Chorale got Highly Commended awards.

· 1st in the New Zealand song category went to NayCol Chorale

· 1st and 2nd in the non-New Zealand category went to Sotto Voce for two of their songs.

· Overall, the choir's choice award went to 1st place NayCol Chorale and 2nd place Sotto Voce

Thanks to 'Muted,' one of Nayland's regional Rockquest finalists, along with Head of Music Miss Kay Mackenzie and Toby Sussex for joining these choirs at the Big Sing to play an accompaniment to some of their pieces.

We will now await the other regional competitions taking place before we hear if either of our choirs have been selected for the national finals or the southern cadenza.

A big thanks goes to Nigel Weeks the director of our Mixed choir, Zoe Dee the Director of the Girls' Choir and Rebecca Monopoli who came in to work alongside Nigel Weeks. Another big thanks to Pauline Boyd and Anne Shearer who played the pianist accompaniments for these two choirs each week during practices and at the competition.
