Nayland College's Kapa Haka Rōpu, Pūaha Te Tai have grown in strength and numbers over the past few years.

Following their outstanding success at the Kapa Haka Regional Competition last year where they performed in their school uniforms, Nayland College, the Board of Trustees, Pūaha Te Tai Whānau and their Runanga Mātua, have worked collaboratively to obtain traditionally made piupiu for Pūaha Te Tai Kapa Haka Rōpu to wear in future competitions.

Their next major competition is coming up in August this year.

Master Weaver Karl Leonard has handcrafted the piupiu in the traditional way.

His work is highly sought after and we have been honoured to have been chosen by him to receive this full set of piupiu.

He is holding a wānanga after the Pōwhiri to discuss:

  • the history of weaving
  • the process of making traditional piupiu
  • how to wear them properly
  • how to preserve them

Karl Leonard, and his wife, Ruiha Ruwhiu will be presenting the full set of 40 traditional piupiu to Nayland College with a Pōwhiri at 5pm.
