Music Mix

Whanake Youth/NCMA/Nelson City Council —

NCMA, Whanake Youth and Nelson City Council are running a free music program over five weeks with a variety of musical learning opportunities open to all community members in Stoke. First up is Bucket Drumming with Colette Jansen on Saturday 25 February.

Whanake Youth is happy to welcome NCMA to the youth hall on Saturdays, for an exciting new program in Stoke. NCMA and Nelson Council have developed an awesome music program, introducing people to music, utilizing a variety of instruments and musical tools.

This program will be running for 5 weeks, starting Saturday 25th February, 11am - 12pm.

Week 1 welcomes Colette Jansen from Creative Music Enterprises, with Bucket Drumming.

A little bit about Colette:

Nelson is Colette’s hometown, but she has moved around NZ following her career in radio and her passion for music. Her musical journey began as a young girl singing with her sisters while doing the dishes. This led to performing small sets at events and functions.

As a teenager, she took singing lessons and was involved in music theatre. Colette moved to Wellington and worked in commercial and non-commercial radio. She studied Jazz Vocal performance at the ‘Jazz School’ in Christchurch, now Ara Institute of Canterbury. She has performed with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, at corporate gigs with an Andrews Sisters style trio, recorded a CD of Jazz Standards, sung on radio jingles and as a session singer, and also had her own radio programme.

In 2018 Colette returned to study and graduated from Victoria University Wellington as a music therapist. She has now set up her business ‘Creative Music Enterprises’ in Nelson. Colette also works alongside the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts (NCMA) coordinating the NelSONG neurological choir – a social singing group. During Covid Colette designed and developed a ‘Bucket Drumming’ workshop which people are enjoying, and is available through NCMA.

“NZ Registered Music Therapists use the special qualities of music in a shared relationship with their clients, to meet personal needs, support learning, and promote healing and change. They work with people of all ages and abilities, with individuals and groups, and in many different settings”.
