Close finish for table tennis talents

Nayland College Official —

Just before the end of last term, Nayland College teams competed in the Tasman Secondary Schools Table Tennis Championship.

The senior team of Escher Kendrick, Matthew Edmonds and Mandy Lowther progressed easily through the pool play and quarter finals without dropping a match, before meeting Marlborough Boys in the semis.

This time all the games went into a third set, with some amazing table tennis on display. Luck was on their side as they won both games in the doubles.

Matthew also won his singles to take the tie 3-2. The final was then against Garin College's A team that included two top competition players. Matthew again pulled off a win in his singles in a tense three set match.

Mandy was not so lucky with hers. Escher’s and Matthew's doubles match went point for point before they both made errors at a critical time, losing the third set game 12-14.

Sadly, with losing the doubles Garin had won the tie 3-2, and Nayland had to settle for 2nd overall.  However,  the final match of the day between Escher and Garins’ Kvido Taylere proved a fantastic one to watch, again point for point and lots of skilful table tennis. Escher held his nerve and finally took it, making Garin realise just how close Nayland College were to taking the trophy from them.
