Silence as a social action

Nayland College Official —

There have been many social actions taking place over recent times at Nayland College. All of them have been to raise money and awareness for World Vision and specifically for the children of the South Sudan refugee crisis.

Since the start of term 2 the level 2 sociology class has been organizing fundraising for the 40 Hour Famine, as well as other social actions such as raffles and bake sales. Now that the 40 Hour Famine has taken place and the numbers have come back, the students of level 2 sociology would like to thank everyone who participated or contributed in any way.

We have been able to raise approximately $2300 and the number keeps rising with the last few booklets still to come in. All the help and support to raise money for the refugees of South Sudan is much appreciated. Thank you again for all the amazing support.

One student who participated in the 40 Hour Famine said he gained a lot personally from the experience. "It felt good to try to understand some of the issues people face in our world.  (...) It was more of an insight into the less fortunate," Will said.

Another student, Tom, put it like this. "Not speaking for 20 hours was a challenge, but a good one. It helped me open my eyes to the harsh fact that many of these poor people do not have a voice. I raised $12 which was perhaps not as much as I aspired to raise originally, but my main success lay in my efforts to spread awareness for the cause, and raise funds elsewhere (for example, selling raffle tickets etc..)."

"I am incredibly thankful to World Vision for providing this opportunity not only for myself but the innocent people facing such hardships in South Sudan," Tom continued.
