Principal's Message

Daniel Wilson - Principal —

Dear parents and caregivers,

We are very rapidly approaching the end of the school year.  However, Nayland College is still a very busy and exciting place for our junior students with many opportunities over the coming weeks. Our Year 10 students will be engaged in a wide range of activities over the coming week; I am sure they will have a wonderful educational experience no matter what option they have chosen. I know that teachers have a variety of exciting in-class activities planned for Year 9 students as well as they wind up their units of learning. Good luck also to three of our junior volleyball teams who will be travelling to Dunedin next week for the South Island Championships.

At this time of year it is always disappointing when students make unwise decisions. I would like to once again emphasise the zero tolerance approach that Nayland College takes to violence and drugs. If any student engages in this type of behaviour they will face the most serious disciplinary consequences, which could result in the Board of Trustees excluding them from the school. I would encourage you to reinforce to your child(ren) all of the positive opportunities that are available to students over the next couple of weeks and to ensure that they are aware of our very firm stance towards anti-social behaviour.

It is pleasing to see construction work pressing forward at the school. Block 2 will be fully ready for occupancy at the start of term 2 next year, with some classes allowed downstairs from term 1. The Kuaka Café will also open at the start of term 1. Due to roll growth we have been requested by the Ministry of Education to leave block 3 in place until a full analysis of regional trends can be completed next year. At this point the board will work with the Ministry to attempt to secure modern classrooms across every room in the school. I would like to thank our Business Manager, John Hall, for the vast amount of work he has done in the background to move our projects forward.

Ngā mihi nui
