Friday Five - Jo Cotton

Nayland College —

Physical Education teacher and Head of House for Phoenix, Jo Cotton is the second teacher featured for our 'Friday Five' questions.

How long have you been teaching and how long you been at Nayland College?

I have been teaching for 12 years.  I have been at Nayland for 5 years as a Secondary school student and then returned in 2000 as a Assistant Sports Director.  I have been at Nayland for a total of 22 years.................

What are your passions and areas of expertise?

My passions are Rugby especially girls rugby; Rugby 7's; Touch; Netball; running; watching cricket and America's cup; watching my children play sport; drinking coffee; spending time with my friends and partner; travelling; eating chocolate brownies and thai green curry.

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey?

Mr Olley.  When I was at school he helped me, made me believe I can achieve anything, and to this day still does.

What is your favorite thing about the school?

There are so many.......the students and the staff.  The thing I enjoy the most is walking down the driveway and always getting a "Hi Ms" or a "Hey Ms I need......." ,"Ms I was.......", "Kia ora Ms", "Ms have you got any food". This is my favourite thing and it always makes me smile.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I want to be that teacher that someone remembers, that inspired someone, that made them achieve their goal, or encouraged them to achieve there goal, that helped them achieve their goal, made them believe in themselves, and that they could achieve anything, that helped them get there.  That is what inspires me to be better at what I do for all of my students.
