NayCol Year 10 Institute of Sport Waka Haerenga

Lauren Mekalick —

After a postponed 2021 trip, the Nayland College Year 10 Institute of Sport class, along with teachers Brennan Geddes, Zoe Walker and Lauren Mekalick, headed to Kaiteriteri for a Waka Haerenga.

Waka Abel Tasman guided our group in three waka from Kaiteriteri, stopping at Motu Kaka, Ngaio Motu, Marahau, Toka Ngawhā (Split Apple Rock) and back to Kaiteretere.

Students learnt about the significance of the area to local iwi and hapū, and the importance of sustainability. Students also participated in team building, learning about the waka and how to be strong and work together. Throughout the day we practised a haka, which allowed us to be focused in the moment and grounded to the environment.

One student commented that their favourite part of the day was the waka sprint competitions we had against one another. Another student said their favourite part of the day was learning about salps (small jellyfish which purify the ocean). Another student commented that their favourite part of the day was hearing the sound of our final haka echoing around the bay when returning to Kaiteretere, and the return call from Whenua Iti students on the beach.

Thanks to Brennan and Zoe for joining us on our trip, and many thanks to Abbe West who organised such a rich learning opportunity for our students.
