Additional Pathways information for Subject Selection

This briefly explains what is involved in the Gateway, Trades Academy and Pathway+ Programme for Year 12-13. Please encourage your child to meet Ms Wall in the library during Akoranga time, 1st August if they are wanting further information

Gateway students already know what career they wish to explore and are willing to be placed out in the community with a business, for a work placement

  • Suitable for students aiming for an apprenticeship or employment during 2019, or  the following year
  • Students must be ‘work ready’ i.e. positive attitude and willing to be engaged
  • Capable of working independently in order to achieve 20 industry credits
  • Be prepared to miss one day a week of school for at least one term
  • Be able to catch up on other subjects independently, or by using Gateway classroom time
  • Can take Gateway ‘off-line’ which means outside of the school timetable (an extra subject)
  • Have a personalised learning programme to reflect their career pathway


Trades Academy students attend NMIT or Whenua Iti as part of the Top of the South Trades Academy Programme. It is one day a week (or block courses) in one of 14 Trades e.g. Hairdressing, Civil Infrastructure, Uniformed Services, etc.

  • Suitable for students aiming to gain industry knowledge, explore a career option and experience tertiary study
  • Students will be able to achieve between 16-28 credits
  • Need to be motivated to catch up on other subjects when supervised in the Trades class with a teacher
  • Can take Trades ‘off-line’ which means outside of the school timetable (an extra subject)
  • Free transportation is provided to and from the relevant campus

Pathway+ is a course designed strongly around employability and work readiness skills. Students will be exposed to a wide range of industry sectors and will be on individual learning plans to suit their industry interest. 
This course will run over two subject lines and an additional three subjects are required.

Students will:

  • Investigate several vocational options to identify a pathway to pursue
  • Research thoughtful goals and career entry options
  • Identify the necessary employability skills required for transition into their chosen pathway
  • Explore options for further training, whether it is tertiary education, or on-the-job training
  • Gain local industry knowledge through speakers in our community
  • Be mentored intensively throughout the year by the subject teacher
  • Gain a minimum of 22 relevant Level 3 credits
  • Have a personalised learning programme to reflect their career pathway

Opportunities for students to be placed on a regular work placement are available through our Gateway Programme within this course.
