Year 12 student to get a taste of university life

Duncan McKinlay —

16-year-old Lily Wiegand will get an opportunity to see what the future holds, as she has been selected to go to the 2021 Rotary International Science and Technology Forum in Auckland taking place in January of 2021.

Her place is partly financed by the Christchurch Rotary Club who have pitched in $1000 for Lily to have this opportunity.

According to the Rotary Organisation, “The forum is a programme aimed at high achieving, well-rounded science, maths and technology students in Year 12 at New Zealand Secondary Schools who will be returning to Year 13 and who are planning to study science or technology subjects at tertiary level in New Zealand.” Candidates are selected based on positive personal qualities and proven scholastic achievement.

Lily explained that the forum gives potential university students the chance to experience what it is like to study at university and what a variety of different programs encompass.

“You do lots of hands-on activities and programs,” she said. “You go to the different facilities they have and see what things you could take. You can go into Radio New Zealand and see them live on air,”
