From the courts to the classroom

Nayland College Official —

Today we meet another 'not so new' face to Nayland, Dayna Whiting. Dayna was our Sports Coordinator and Netball Coach before deciding to train as a teacher. In 2021 we welcome her back as one of our new recruits, teaching Physical Education and Health and Social Studies.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?

Born and raised in Sunny Nelson.

Where else have you lived besides Nelson?

Dunedin when completing my university degree.

Why did you decide to be a teacher?

I had been coaching sport for a long time and it is something I really enjoyed. I like the idea of being able to make a difference in adolescence life and feel like teaching is somewhere that I can do that. I find my coaching skills are transferable/compliments to teaching.

What do you like about teaching, and teaching at Nayland specifically?

The relationships that have been built with colleagues and students. I find teaching very rewarding.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spend time with my family and friend and play Netball and Volleyball.

What are your passions and areas of expertise?

My passions are all sports and physical activity however I have also enjoyed teaching migration and culture in social studies this year thus far. My expertise is would be specifically in Netball and Volleyball but also physical activity and wellbeing in general.

What were you like as a student at school?

I had high expectations of myself and didn't like to fail. Sport played a big role in making want to achieve.

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey?

My parents and certain coaches/teachers from school.
