Junior Health curriculum

Brennan Geddes —

A letter from our Head of Health and Physical Education, Brennan Geddes, regarding our Health curriculum for Year 9 and 10 students. A document outlining our junior Health programme is also attached.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Re. Health Curriculum

We have had a positive start to the year in our Health classes in the junior school. Both Year 9 and 10 have spent time discussing relationship issues, such as bullying and cyber safety, and have begun developing skills like being assertive and listening actively.

This term students in Year 9 have been focussing on nutrition, whilst at Year 10 the aim has been to build understanding of mental health issues and how setting goals (particularly an active goal) can help support our well-being.

Term 3’s focus is on sexuality. The aim of this unit is to give students information so they can make safe choices for themselves, for example, learning to say “No” assertively.

In Term 4, Year 9 students will complete an inquiry unit and try to support their community by taking some kind of action. Year 10 students will cover drug issues and how they can make sensible choices in the future.

If you have any concerns over the content of our Health curriculum you are welcome to contact me at brennan.geddes@nayland.school.nz or 5479769 ext. 884. Alternatively, you are also welcome to book a parent/teacher interview with me on Thursday 2 July, as an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Kind regards,

Brennan Geddes

HOD Health.
