PE students make the most of the local outdoors

Jolene Cotton —

Year 9 students have been working in Health on a 'Social action unit' whereby students work in groups to take part in a social action / activity in our community. Students have taken part in a number of social actions to enhance individuals or groups wellbeing /Hauora which may include taha tinana (physical), taha whanau (social), taha hinegaro (mental and emotional), taha wairua (spiritual) including whenua (the land).

These social actions have included a wide range and have all been student directed. Examples include picking up rubbish at the beach; teaching volleyball to primary age students that lack confidence in PE; and taking a fun session PE at Broadgreen; recording songs to play at the local rest home; fundraising money for diabetes; donating time to help out shelters and charities to name a few.

At the same time year 10 PE and Health students have been covering a unit that evaluates and experiences the variety of different 'Community Physical Activity Resources' available for teenagers to access locally. Students have visited Monaco playground; Gone for a run around the airport; walked down the railway reserve; walked the great taste trail; visited the local rose garden; Isel park; City fitness to name a few.

Student have enjoyed both units as it has allowed autonomy and them to try something new, get outside their comfort zone and experience all we have to offer so close to our school.
