On Friday 10 June several kura, their supporting whānau and friends gathered at Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre for the 2022 annual Ngā Manu Kōrero competition.

Ngā Manu Kōrero is regarded as the most significant event on the Māori education calendar for nurturing the oratory skills and providing the stage for young people to express their views and to lay down their challenges to an admiring and critical audience of peers, parents, whānau and judges.

Te Kāreti o Neirana had the privilege of hosting this years' event. Many of our tauira showed their support and talents by serving our guests and judges with yummy kai and beautiful waiata. We had two speakers stand this year. 

Rosie Goomes competed in the Tā Turi Kara (Junior English) section. It was Rosie's first year competing in Ngā Manu Kōrero. Xanthe Banks competed in the Pei Te Hurinui Jones (Senior Māori) section. Both speakers recieved incredible comments from the judges and audience. 

Xanthe won the Senior Māori Impromptu, placed second in the Senior Māori Prepared and won the overall aggregate for Senior Māori. It has been close to 30 years since a Nayland College student has won the Senior Māori section. This is a feat that Xanthe should be proud of as a Year 11 student! She will attend the national competition later this year.
