Daniel Wilson —

Welcome back and a very special welcome to all new students!

Dear parents/caregivers

It has been a wonderful start to the year at Nayland College, with our mihi whakatau on Tuesday welcoming 345 new year 9 students, 70 students from other year levels, 50 new international students and many new staff to the school.  Starting next week Nayland College will publish a fortnightly electronic newsletter.  On alternative weeks a shorter 'update', such as today's issue, will be published.  This will include more general community notices.

Students will have noticed that our House Tutor system has changed slightly for 2020.  We are taking a bold approach to our pastoral support programme this year and have introduced a different form of support for junior students. The reasoning behind this change will be fully explained in next week's newsletter.  However, we can assure you that students at Nayland College continue to have a fantastic layer of support though our tutor class and peer mentor programme.

Nayland College is a rapidly growing organisation, with a total roll for 2020 of 1375 (including 80 international students).  This is approximately 200 more students than last year.  Our school buildings can currently accommodate 1400 students, meaning the Ministry of Education is now looking at preliminary options to ensure Nayland College does not exceed capacity.  If any restrictions are to be placed on our enrolment zone the Ministry of Education will have to run a consultation process. We look forward to hearing their ideas on how they will ensure students are not excluded from a co-educational secondary option in Nelson City.

Congratulations to all of our senior students on their 2019 NCEA results, it was pleasing to see an increase in achievement across various levels and endorsements. We had one outstanding success that is currently embargoed - watch this space!

I look forward to another action packed year at Nayland College.

Ngā mihi nui,

Daniel Wilson
