River's tui join the chorus

Sarah Luton —

Despite delays with all the rain, River has completed his mission to bring life and colour to an otherwise blank Chorus telecommunications box.

Both Nayland College and The Waimea Weekly have been eagerly awaiting the finished artwork ever since we first heard that River had been selected to beautify one of Chorus' telecommunications boxes on Salisbury Road.

Over the past few weeks River has spent many hours sanding, preparing and painting the box and it's finally finished.

"The weather was the biggest challenge," River said. "It was raining quite a bit at the start so I couldn't do any work, when it was sunny and hot I couldn't work too long due to the paint drying to fast."

Having overcome the challenges River is now just pleased to have his work on display.

"It feels really good knowing so many people will see my work."

When asked what inspired his work he replied, "I grew up in the country with lots of kowhai trees and tui hanging around.'

Now that he has finished, River is focusing back on other projects, creating pieces of art to sell at the local arts and crafts market held monthly in the Richmond Baptist carpark.
