New books in the library

Tracey Winslade (Library Manager) —

The great realisation / Tomos Roberts

During Lockdown last year, the following video was circulated and felt deeply moving at the time. Especially as we witnessed pollution levels drop around the world and mountains could be seen that hadn’t been seen for decades, birds sang louder - or maybe we just could hear them.

This book, the written version, has now been published. Please read it and watch the video and share with your whanau. Such a moving video; such a potent important message. Skip the ads.

The kingdom of Back / Marie Lu

Did you know that famed musical prodigy/composer Wolfgang Mozart, had an older, equally talented sister? Her name was Maria Anna. When they were children they used to travel and perform together on stage. But this was 18th Century Europe and she was a woman. So when she became of marriageable age her father forbade her to perform anymore. Utterly compliant she stopped. The two siblings were very close as children and created an imaginary world, they called it the Kingdom of Back, in which they were King and Queen. Marie Lu has taken their story and woven historical fiction and fantasy together to imagine a “What If” story, in which Maria Anna’s life could be completely different….

Before you knew my name / Jacqueline Bublitz

This is a murder mystery set in New York City (concrete jungle where dreams are made of – thanks Alicia Keys) which pulsates as a major character of this story. Two women gravitate there; to change their lives and escape their pasts, however one of them is murdered and becomes the unidentified Jane Doe and narrator of the book. Yes - like “The lovely bones” but not the same.

The other woman is the Jogger who finds the body, thus connecting these two characters. Here is their story. It is about loss of life, the vulnerability of women, of justice for the anonymous, and yes, confrontingly, of what happens to women and why. This is the debut novel by this author, you can find it in the Senior Reading section of the Library.

The God equation / Michio Kaku

Science!! The truth seekers, the curious and the aspirational. Those who pull things apart to see how they work then make it bigger and better. The problem solver, the medical healers, the thinkers.

This book is an accessible read outlining the history of physics and perhaps its future. The author is one of the first physicists to write papers on string theory. Er, go look it up. This will take you from Ancient Greek understanding of the Universe, to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, Newton’s Motion and Gravity, Maxwell’s Electricity, Light and Magnetism and how these pillars of Physics are bound together, and he envisages a future where Quantum mechanics and general Relativity are perhaps bound together too. Heck, I want to read this myself. If you are keen to learn more about the Universe and have it nicely packaged in a single book try this one.
