Daniel Wilson —

Mr. Wilson reflects on our 2019 musical and previews the upcoming winter sport season.

What an absolute privilege it was to see several performances of our 2019 musical production ‘Oliver!’ at the Theatre Royal last week. Oliver is the latest in a long history of fabulous musicals that the school has performed and the cast and crew were delighted to have full houses for each of the shows. The standing ovations at the performances were truly justified. There were sensational lead cast members, a very tuneful and energetic chorus, an amazing orchestra and professional technical and backstage crew to produce almost faultless performances. The cast also featured 35 'orphans' from Broadgreen Intermediate who truly were a worthy addition, particularly in singing the iconic song ‘Food, Glorious Food’ at the start of the show.

A huge thanks must go out to all of the staff and parents involved in the mammoth task of making this opportunity possible for our students.  As well as a tremendous expression of gratitude to Verity Davidson, Director; Nigel Weeks, Musical Director; Melissa Berla, Choreographer; Alison Cormack, Vocal Coach and Kate Scarlett, Accompanist. Don’t miss the video and review attached to this newsletter.

The winter sport season has well and truly started. In particular, we have the highest number of netball teams participating in recent history and it is once again fantastic to see strong boys and girls rugby teams taking the field. We are looking forward to the Tawa College exchange from 19-21 May. A huge thank you in advance to all the families who have offered to host students during this time. We look forward to having good crowds for the games across the codes we will be hosting this year.

Next week I will be updated on the changes proposed following the 2018 NCEA consultation process.  In advance of this meeting I have been asked to send a very quick survey out to parents, staff and students. I would appreciate it if yourself and any students you have at the school could complete this survey as soon as possible to assist with the decision-making process moving forward.

Finally, it is exciting to see final touches to the block 2 refurbishment taking place.  We are hoping to occupy the remainder of the rooms in the coming two weeks.
