Inspiring learners with super cool science stuff
Each fortnight we have been profiling our 2022 'New to Nayland' teaching staff. Today we meet Colin Frewin who has joined us this year from Hamilton Girls High School and brings with him a passion for all the cool things about science.
Where were you born and where did you grow up?
Born in Timaru,

Why did you decide to be a
teacher? And what drew towards becoming a science teacher in particular?
I got an iPod Shuffle for my 33rd birthday, I started listening to podcasts and discovered a couple of really cool science based ones. This reignited my love of the subject, and I figured I'd try to convince others that science is pretty AWESOME too.
What do you like about teaching, and teaching at Nayland specifically?
Talking about cool science stuff is fun. Seeing students faces when they think about some of the really big ideas is great. Conversations with students that have learnt something world changing is fun.
What are your passions and
areas of expertise?
3D printing, genetics
definitely.
Who has inspired you on your
own learning journey?
Glynn Washington

What do you like to do in your
spare time?
Mountain biking with friends, pottery, DIY.
What were you like as a student
at school?
I got bullied a lot so was a
little bit hoha, but I was a bit of a nerd and did all my work, so I
managed to get away with it.
What did you do for a living
before you became a teacher?
I worked in the Quality Lab and Inwards Goods at Coca-Cola, and a Biotech firm called Invitrogen.
What is the most interesting
thing you have done in your life so far?
I did a student exchange to the
USA in 1993. I'm still in contact with my family and have been back to
visit three times.

If you could share one piece of
wisdom with the students of Nayland College what would it be?
If you think this
is "hard" and you do 'lots of work', this is nothing compared to
an actual job!
