Kids Kayak Course: 20-24 January 2020

Kayak School, Murchison —

Five days of kayaking related goodness, working up towards an overnight expedition on the river!

  • Kids Kayak Course is 5 days of kayaking goodness around the whitewater hub that is Murchison, for kids aged 12-15 years. Rivers we may use are the Buller, Matakitaki and Mangles.
  • We maintain an extremely safe river classroom, and emphasize fun, while learning through creative games. Kids can often learn faster than their parents! There will be a 1:4 ratio of instructors to kids on the river, which ensures that we can manage groups safely, as well as the opportunity to have people of similar ability together.
  • Kids are provided with a safe environment to build social skills, and the week will provide opportunities to promote responsibility, communication and respect amongst the kids. Along with the mental and physical challenge of river kayaking, the program is assure to be a confidence builder and facilitate the development of skills which will transfer to life off the river.
  • The general plan for the week is to build up confidence and skill at a pace that suits each individual, using various different bodies of water; the pool, flat water, moving water, and of course, te awa, the river! Working towards an Overnight Expedition where we will spend 2 days and 1 night out on the river!
  • We will also facilitate some land based afternoon activities, as well as evening activities. We will provide the opportunity for chill out/free time.
  • Full gear hire is included in the cost and covers kayak, paddle, helmet, spray-skirt, life jacket and splash top. Feel free to bring along any of your own personal gear. Our equipment is regularly checked and maintained to ensure it is in great condition. We do ask for you to bring your own thermals/fleece top and pants if possible, but do have limited amounts to borrow if need be.
  • We will have onsite camping (inclusive in cost) with around the clock supervision from parent helpers. If you are free on these dates (some or all), and are able to offer up your time to help supervise, we can offer a discounted rate for your child on the course. If you are local, or have somewhere else you would prefer your child to stay that is completely fine.
  • For those staying onsite, breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided (also inclusive in cost). Dietary requirements can be catered for, and the aim is for delicious, nutritious food.
