Building positive relationships an important aspect of health education

Jo Cotton —

During Term Three, Year 9 and Year 10 students in Health Education have been developing their understanding and competency regarding positive sexuality.

Students have been strengthening their personal knowledge, values and respect for themselves and others, whilst engaging in processes to help them make responsible decisions that will enhance their wellbeing.

Forming positive relationships with others was a key aspect of this unit. By listening actively, negotiating, and sharing ideas throughout the unit, students were creating positive relationships in class and also discussing what positive relationships should look like in their wider world.

In this task (see image below) students worked in small groups to negotiate and identify aspects that make up healthy relationships. Being in a healthy relationship enhances wellbeing and positive sexuality, allowing students to make safe choices in a range of contexts and gain respect for themselves and others.
