Meet Michelle Ainley!

Nayland College —

Throughout the year we have been profiling our new recruits and today we feature Michelle Ainley who has joined our Nayland whānau as a Teacher of Mathematics.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?

I was born on the North Shore of Auckland and grew up there by the beach in Browns Bay.

Where else have you lived besides Nelson?

I have been fortunate to be able to live in a few places around the world. I lived in Italy for 3 years after graduating from the University of Auckland. I also got to live in Japan for 3 years once becoming a Mum. In New Zealand I have lived in Nelson, Mount Maunganui and Dunedin.

Why did you decide to be a teacher?

I always wanted to be a teacher. When I was at primary school I used to teach my teddies and fancied myself as a preschool teacher. Then at high school I thought I’d like to be a primary school teacher. Then in my final year at school I saw the light and realised that high school would be the most challenging but rewarding.

What do you like about teaching, and teaching at Nayland specifically?

I love the light bulb moments in class, seeing students really understand what we are talking about. I love Mathematics and want all my students to like it too. Specifically about Nayland, I enjoy the diversity of our students.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

With three kids I spend a lot of my time outside of school running around after them. My two daughters and I all play Netball on Saturday and my son plays rugby. We try to get out and about as much as we can on our Sundays.

What were you like as a student at school?

I wasn’t particularly smart, just a normal run of the mill student. I like to think that I was a kind student to both my teachers and peers. I was really involved in sports at school and was the sports captain in Year 13 (7th form back then!).

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey?

My mum was a teacher and she cared so much about her students. I like to think I am similar to her.

Question from Lauren Prestidge: What’s been a highlight in your life so far?

Wow, hard question! Would have to be becoming a Mum. I have been so lucky to be a stay at home Mum and watching my 3 children grow up has been so rewarding.

What question would you like to ask the next interviewee?

What is your favourite memory of your time at high school?
