Principal's Message 14 February, 2020

Daniel Wilson —

Our first full newsletter for 2020!

Dear parents/caregivers

It has been an absolute privilege to welcome back all of our students for 2020 and of course a very special welcome to all of our new families.

The school year has already had a busy start, with all of our classes now up and running and special events such as House Day today adding to the vibrancy of the school.  In particular I have been delighted with how our new peer support programme has contributed to our new year 9 students feeling welcome and supported at Nayland College. We have taken a unique approach to our tutor class structures this year to differentiate between the support required for junior and senior students.  You can read more about the changes and why they have been made in this newsletter.

I was delighted to receive the news that Nayland College students won ten scholarships in 2019.  Of particular note is the outstanding achievement by Merlyn Barrer.  Merlyn was the top student in the country for Earth and Marine Science (I have never seen Mr. Bloomfield so proud!) and his three outstanding scholarships mean he has won an Outstanding Scholarship Award - of which only six were awarded in the South Island. In fact Merlyn was only one point off winning a 'premier' award. Nayland College students continue to achieve success at the highest possible level, something the whole community can be proud of. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Merlyn, his very supportive parents and the staff who have nurtured Merlyn and so many more students on their learning journeys.

A full newsletter will be published every fortnight, with smaller updates on alternating weeks.  If your child has had any success at school or in the community we would love to showcase these achievements through this medium.  Please feel free to contact the school on xtend@nayland.school.nz to ensure we are aware of any notable achievements in any field; academic, sport, arts, community or cultural.

There are many ways you can keep in touch with the school:
