Stoke Tāhunanui Kāhui Ako Matariki Celebration

Sarah Luton —

In spite of some very wet weather, our inaugural Matariki Celebration was a wonderful collaboration celebrating Māori New Year and the amazing talents of our wonderful students.

The evening started with welcoming and raising the new tino rangatiratanga flag with staff and students from Pūaha Te Tai supporting with karakia and a haka.

Students from many of the schools in the Kāhui Ako brought along art displays that filled the Nayland College hall foyer and lined the ceiling and walls inside the hall.

Enner Glynn set up a star hunt around the school with QR codes for visitors to scan and listen to the stories behind each of the stars in the Matariki cluster. The stars are still up around the school so if you're venturing out and about over the holidays, see how many you can find!

Many thanks to Nelson City Council for setting up the fantastic light displays and to the food vendors who braved the rain! Thank you especially to the staff and students from all the schools who worked hard behind the scenes to put on an amazing night!
