Sports coach turned science teacher

Nayland College —

Every fortnight we have been profiling our 'New to Nayland' teachers and today we meet Mr Simon Patel, one of our new Science teachers in 2021.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in the UK and moved to NZ 15 years ago.

Where else have you lived besides Nelson?

I have lived in England, Scotland, Germany and now NZ

Why did you decide to be a teacher and what drew towards becoming a Science teacher in particular?

As a sports coach I really enjoyed working with young people and helping them to achieve their goals. When I moved to NZ I decided that I should turn that enjoyment into a career. I became a science teacher because I have always been curious to know how things work.

What do you like about teaching, and teaching at Nayland specifically?

I love the moment when a student understands a concept for the first time. Nayland has a special feel about it where everyone wants to help you succeed, I value that sense of unity.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like to keep fit through running, cycling or getting involved in outdoor activities. Nelson is perfect for that – get out there and enjoy it!

What were you like as a student at school?

I was sporty but also wanted to learn so I tried hard in my classes.

When I retire, I want to..

Enjoy the outdoor activities on offer around Nelson, actually spend time working on my veggie plot and do some more travelling.

What are your passions and areas of expertise?

I am passionate about sports, in particular football. My area of scientific expertise is Chemistry but I really enjoy all aspects of science and am loving teaching Physics this year.

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey?

I had a great teacher when I was at school called Mr Chenery. I didn’t realise at the time how inspiring he was and regret not seeking him out to let him know that he made a difference. Another great mentor was a previous teacher at Nayland called Treena Blythe.

What is your favourite thing about the school?

Other than the beautiful food that the hospitality students produce I would have to say I love the house events that encourage a spirit of working together. I also enjoy the discussions that happen in senior classes when the students are inquisitive to know more.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I would like to remain healthy and to keep seeking out and taking opportunities e.g. I would like to cycle the Heaphy track.

Describe yourself with three words:

Sporty, nerdy, honest.

What did you do for a living before you became a teacher at Nayland College?

I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 15 years.

What makes you passionate about being a teacher?

I believe that the work I do helps to ensure that the next generation of leaders will be better informed and make better decisions than my generation.

Question from Sue Ford: If you could travel anywhere in the world - where would it be and why?

Antarctica – it is an untouched wilderness and there are not many of those around, I just hope I can cope with the cold!

Give me one question to ask the next teacher we profile…

What is one book everyone should read?
