Friday Five Questions

Cristy Monds —

This weeks 'Friday Five' questions feature Naylands long serving Teacher of English, Chris Matthews.

How long have you been teaching and how long you been at Nayland College?
I taught my first lesson at St. Andrew’s College when I was a housemaster there in 1973, and I started at Nayland on Monday, Week 5, Term 3, 1998.

What are your passions and areas of expertise?
My passions are short stories, Bob Dylan, NZ military history and playing tennis. I don’t think I have got particular expertise, just a lot of interest in many things.

Who has inspired you on your own learning journey?
Over the years I have drawn a lot of inspiration from students who have gone on to achieve some pretty amazing things. 50 years ago Dr W.B. Sutch came to our school to speak at assembly. What he said was a watershed moment for me.

What is your favourite thing about the school?
Being a small part in the lives of so many great kids.

What are your ambitions for the future?
To paint a picture someone wants to put on their wall, to finish a book of short stories and to bike from Bordeaux to the Black Sea.
