Nayland students Emma Cottom, Uma Vij and Brooke Gabb competed for their FC Nelson Football Club at the Alan Fraser Memorial Tournament over the July holidays.

They travelled to Christchurch for the event and played five games over two days to take home the bronze medal in their 14 and under grade.  

Brooke says it was a bit of shock to find out they had won a medal.  "It was our first tournament ever, so we were pretty stoked to come third," she said.

For Brooke, who's just returned to the side after an injury, the result was extra sweet.  "We had a bet with our coach [Kerry Eggers] that if we came third or over, he was to buy us ice cream!"

The team is buoyed by the placing and plans to compete in more tournaments in the future.
