Nayland College sports update

Brendan Crichton —

It’s been a very busy start to the winter sports season, especially over the past few weeks.

We have been running from one Tasman School Sports event to the next and on top of that the weekly competition for Rugby, Football, Netball and Basketball is in full swing.

We had seven teams compete in the Tasman Secondary Schools Futsal Championships, the largest continent from all the regional school. Our two girls teams placed 3rd and 5th. The two junior boys teams both won through their pools to meet in an all-Nayland final with the Year 10 team claiming rights in a closely fought final winning 3-2 over the Year 9 boys. At the Tasman Secondary Schools Cross Country we had a small competitive team where all students placed well in their grades. Noticeable placing to Keshia Linyard 5th in the Year 9 girls, Ellie Beever 5th in the Junior girls and Shinaye Toms 5th in the Senior girls.

Nayland returned to the Tasman Secondary School Squash Champs for the first time in several years with our boy’s and girl’s teams. Both teams competed well with the girls placing 4th.

The 1st XI Boys Football team started their qualifying games for nationals against Nelson College and over the next 4 weeks will also play games against Waimea College and Marlborough Boys College.

The Jill Heath Memorial Cup was again up for grabs and is played for every time Nayland plays Nelson College. First being played in 2012 in honor of Jill who managed Nelson College from the 1980’s till 2012. Nelson College retained the cup winning 3-0 but it will again be played for in two weeks time in the return fixture.
