Nayland HAS got talent!

Duncan McKinlay —

Due to Level 2 restrictions, one of the highlights of the Nayland calendar, Nayland's Got Talent, had to make the leap to becoming an online competition this year. The votes have been tallied and the winner is...Sugarloaf.

Our wonderful student leaders, with the guidance of Student Leadership Coordinator Alice Scott, adapted the Nayland tradition to a virtual competition, after Level 2 Covid-19 conditions made it not possible to fill the hall up to the brim with all the competitors and audience members that the event usually attracts.

Instead, would-be competitors sent in videos of themselves performing. The student leaders then got together with over 20 other student leaders from the other local colleges to watch the videos and choose the final four from the dozen entries. This was a compromise to make up for the fact that Nayland usually invites the other student leaders along to be guest judges of the live event.

The group of leaders whittled the entries down to four. These were then shown in tutor times last week. Each tutor class then voted on their favourite. The student leaders then had the daunting task of counting up over 300 votes, to see who won. This year, the winner was our senior rock band, Sugarloaf. You can see their winning entry above. Below, you'll see the other top three entries.

I think you'll agree, although the event lacked a live audience this year, it certainly didn't lack in talent!
