Total commitment sees Nayland right through to end

PE teacher Bruno Watkins —

Level 3 PE recently completed their annual duathlon event at Moturoa (Rabbit Island). This event has been going for close to 15 years and includes many of the local secondary schools.

It involved a 2.6km run, 10km bike and a 1.3km run to the finish and most students succeeded in completing the race within the 49 minute mark to pass, with some in less than 40 minutes!

This was a great reward after eight weeks training that really tested the attitude and mental resolve of the students. This year’s group committed particularly well, and we were very pleased with their efforts and sportsmanship shown on the day.

There were a number of highlights that need a special mention.  The first is that we had the most students participating across the four schools involved.

The second is the fact that Ella Holmes won the girls event with a time of 43:37, while Zack Stones won the boys' event with a time of 37.33 minutes, even with took a slight detour.

The third highlight was that the final runner of the day was a Nayland student who had worked exceptionally hard throughout the term to meet her goal of completing the event. When she came through to finish her last lap, many of the other athletes had packed up and left. However, the entire Nayland crew had waited behind and jumped in and ran alongside her, cheering and encouraging her towards the finish.
