Hospitality Olympics

Freya Roberts (Year 11 student) —

My Level 1 Hospitality class and others participated in the “Hospitality Olympics” over the last few weeks of the year.

This consisted of activities that tested the skills we have learnt throughout the year. We had to do a range of jobs from testing our knife skills by perfectly dicing vegetables, to pan control skills by cooking the best pancakes (without burning them). We were also tested in a mystery box challenge; we had to cook or bake for judges based off a list of ingredients and a competition on who could create the best mocktail without a recipe.

For each activity you accumulated points on how efficiently you cooked and how tasty your final product was. After everything was completed and the points were added up, a named winner got to pie Mr Williams in the face (best part of the whole thing).

This was a super enjoyable challenge for us as we were able to test our skills and what we had learnt in a fun way. Hospitality was great for this reason. I really enjoyed this class because it wasn’t focused on writing answers on paper but more about improving useful personal skills. We were able to show our understanding and learning practically, by designing and creating food. The Hospitality Olympics were a great way of taking this style of learning and incorporating competition, our class loved that about this project.

My personal highlight was watching Mr Williams get pied in the face. However, I also enjoyed being able to display creativity in what drink or meal my group chose to make. These were awesome because it was super cool looking around and admiring what other people had created as well.
