Careers News and What's Coming . . .

Moira Raumati —

It has been a busy term in the Careers Department with weekly vocational experiences, NMIT Taster Days, University Liaison visits and Puna Ako sessions for Y13's on University.

Vocational Pathway Experiences

Under the organisation Nelson Regional Development Agency our students were able to explore different vocations first hand.  The students that took this opportunity enjoyed their visits immensely. Joinery, Engineering, Foresty, Aquaculture, IT, Civil Construction, Conservation, Horticulture and Hospitality gave students a wide variety of experiences.  Industry tours included some 'hands on' opportunities especially with hospitality, where students had the chance to create their own mocktail and pizzas at a local restaurant and followed by making  their own dessert at NMIT.  Aquaculture included a boat trip to Okiwi Bay to see working mussel and oyster farms. These industry tours were a fantastic opportunity for our students to checkout future career pathways.

NMIT Taster Days

Last week students had the opportunity to visit NMIT for a half day taster course in a particular area of interest.  They have a wide range of courses available and students were able to get a glimspe of what a day at NMIT involves.

University

Most universities have visited Nayland College already, or held information evenings for students and their whānau.  Students have had the opportunity to attend Puna Ako sessions each Thursday, where Mrs Scott (Careers Advisor) has explained halls of residence applications,  scholarship searches and writing, studylink, loans and allowances and university course planning.  We have also had ex students visit to talk of university life and to offer advice.

The first major application for students is to apply for a hall of residence online (opens 1 August).  Students also need to be aware of dates for university open days, course planning, scholarship closing dates and criteria required for this.  Please inform the careers department if you plan to apply for a scholarship and you require a reference. This is important to give us enough time to collate and write the reference.
