Daniel Wilson —

Dear parents/caregivers

It has been a busy start to term 4, with senior students now finishing off internal assessments and starting to prepare themselves for external exams later in the term.  A by-product of NCEA is that students often feel they have 'finished', when they have reached their 80 credits for the certificate.  We encourage students to keep working until the final days of school.  Learning is more than just about gathering credits and any knowledge they gain will hold them in good stead for 2021.

Despite the impact of Covid, Nayland College is pushing forward with some exciting curriculum changes in 2021.  These include a range of new subjects and course modules for our junior students and an updated timetable to reduce disruption and allow more in-depth time for learning.  You can read more about these exciting changes in this newsletter.

I am looking forward to our annual Gala Concert next Tuesday, albeit very late in the year due to Covid. Students have been hard at work practicing their music, dance and drama items.  There are only a few tickets left, so be in quick if you do not want to miss out on this fabulous night of entertainment.

PTA Fundraising Drive

This year they have set themselves a challenge to raise at least $20,000 to assist the school in retaining the services of our school nurse trial partnership with Whanake Youth. I would like to thank all of those parents that have contributed so far - approximately $7,000 has already been raised. This is a fabulous cause and the timing could not be better as Nayland College, like most secondary schools across New Zealand, look to trim budgets across the board as a result of the loss of income from International Students. You can read more about their fundraising drive here or donate directly through this link.

Community Consultation - Enrolment Zone

As we have now been formally notified by the Ministry of Education that we will need to establish an enrolment scheme next year, we are undergoing a period of community consultation regarding the boundaries of the proposed 'home zone.' To find out more and for information regarding how to make a submission, see the article in today's newsletter.

Enjoy the long weekend and safe travels to all those holidaying away.

Nga mihi nui,

Daniel Wilson
