Animal enthusiast finds perfect fit in teaching Year 9 module
Throughout the year we will be profiling each of our 'new to Nayland' teachers. Today we meet Debbie Swainston, who left a job working for the SPCA to become a science teacher and has found a perfect match for her skills and experience in teaching our Year 9 Animal Behaviour & Welfare module.
Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Auckland and have
lived there all my life up until moving to Nelson in December 2021!
Why did you decide to be a
teacher – and what drew towards becoming a Science teacher in particular?
Teaching has always been on my
mind, but I was waiting for the right time to follow this path. My high
school biology teacher was a big influence in my decision, but also
both my grandparents were teachers (and one a principal!) so it felt very
natural to become a teacher. Science is one of the most fascinating and
ever-changing subjects and I love the variation and possibilities of what
we can teach.
What do you like about
teaching, and teaching at Nayland specifically?
I love that Nayland College
feels like one big whānau and there is a great sense of community across
the school - both staff and students.
What are your passions and
areas of expertise?
One of my greatest passions is
animals and animal welfare. I love that I am able to teach the year 9 module
Animal Behaviour and Welfare to up and coming animal enthusiasts and share
my passion with them!
What do you like to do in your
spare time?
In my spare time I am learning
New Zealand Sign Language, I volunteer at the Nelson SPCA, and I do a
little bit of knitting when I can!
What did you do for a living
before you became a teacher?
I have spent a long time
working in the animal industry! Most recently I was working at the
Auckland SPCA where I was fortunate enough to cross-skill into many areas
- Felines, Canines, Doggy Daycare and management. Prior to that I was a
dog groomer and even earlier than that I worked at a vet clinic!
If you could share one piece of
wisdom with the students of Nayland College what would it be?
Make the most of every
opportunity that comes your way! High school will fly by and before you
know it, you're all grown up. Enjoy your time, have fun, and seize the
day!
Question from previous interviewee Ross Gerritsen: If you could repeat a year of your life which would it be and why?
Tricky question! I would repeat 2020 - while most people think of this as "the covid year" it was actually the year I got married! I would love to live through that experience again as it was such a fun and memorable day. But also, I think I could have spent my lockdown time a bit better and pick up a few more hobbies!
What question would you like to
ask the next interviewee?
If you could have dinner with
any three people in the world, who would they be?
