Naval Careers Explored

Andrea Hawkes —

Nayland College students were invited to tour the Navy inshore patrol vessel HMNZS 'Taupo' which came to Port Nelson last week

Students were able to interact with Navy staff and tour the vessel while learning about naval careers and living and working on board for extended periods.

One Year 13 student had a day long adventure, riding a rib raft out to the vessel and viewing daily drills and activities. This included a man overboard (a dummy weighing 75kgs was rescued), piloting the vessel, and plotting coordinates for steering.

This opportunity and others are listed in the Nayland College daily notices, which students should check each day to ensure they make the most of events and outings on offer.
