Tips for educators and parents for responding to anxiety and reactions

Ministry of Education —

This past week has been a stressful one for everyone in the Nelson/Tasman area and particularly so for those directly affected by the fire. The impact of the ongoing fire/s will be with us all for some time.

Nelson Marlborough Health has issued public health advice as per the link below for people affected by the Pigeon Valley fires. This advice covers free GP visits and pharmacy prescriptions, what to do if you need health advice or healthcare, advice about mental health and mental wellbeing and smoke exposure advice.

The Ministry of Education trauma response team has added an additional set of resources (attached) as suggestions for teachers/parents to help them deal with stress and anxiety in children/young people. Please feel free to share these with your communities. If school staff have ongoing concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your school management, area Service Manager or myself.
