The Ministry of Education has confirmed and finalised the enrolment scheme for Nayland College which will take effect from 2 April 2021.

To avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding at Nayland College, the Ministry of Education has developed an enrolment scheme that will take effect from 2 April 2021.

The first and most important thing for our families and whānau to know is that no student currently enrolled at Nayland College will be affected when this zone takes effect. Secondly, all students who live inside the home zone have an absolute entitlement to enrol at Nayland College under Section 74 (1) of the Education and Training Act 2020. Applicants will be required to provide two current forms of evidence showing proof of address.

The enrolment of out-of-zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020. The Nayland College Board will determine the number of out-of-zone places available for 2022 and notify the community by 28 May. Enrolments for 2022 will open in July and close 27 August 2021. Any out-of-zone enrolments submitted after this date will not be eligible for the ballot. The ballot will be drawn on 13 September and successful out-of-zone enrolments will be notified by 15 September.

Out-of-zone places are subject to priority levels as stated in the Education and Training Act 2020. These are listed below:

• First priority must be given to any applicant who is accepted for enrolment in a Ministry of Education approved special programme run by the school (Note: Nayland does not run any programmes that fit this category);
• Second priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school;
• Third priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the school;
• Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school;
• Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school;
• Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.

The Education and Training Act also states that "If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, fifth, or sixth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group must be by ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under clause 3."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If my student is already at Nayland, can they keep going to Nayland if they live out of zone?

Yes, all currently enrolled students can continue to attend Nayland College.

If we live inside the zone, are we guaranteed a place at Nayland College?

Yes, according to the Education Act, all students who live within the home zone are entitled to enrol at any time.

Can we enrol in advance for 2022 and beyond?

Enrolments for 2022 are not yet open. All enrolment applications will be subject to the enrolment schemes in place at the time the student is due to begin at Nayland so there is no added advantage to applying early. (In other words, there is no queue jumping).

What happens if we want to enrol but live outside of the zone?

If the school has sufficient capacity to take out-of-zone enrolments, the Board will issue a public notice stating the number of vacancies available for the following year and reiterating the enrolment criteria and priority order. If the school receives more applications than there are spaces available, a ballot will be conducted in accordance with legislation.

Are there out-of-zone places available for the remainder of 2021?

No, there will be no additional out-of-zone places offered in 2021.
