Sophie Young and Kalani Sheridan Achieve Highly in their Chosen Sports

Dayna Whiting —

Kalani Sheridan has achieved highly this year in his chosen sport, Cross Country. Meanwhile, Sophie young is less than a week away from competing in her first Womens Club Volleyball Nationals.

Kalani Sheridan has had a very successful Cross Country season. He finished 1st in the Nayland Senior Boys Cross Country and followed on that success to the Tasman Secondary School Cross Country Championship where he also finished 1st in the senior boys competition. From his regional success Kalani decided to travel to Christchurch to compete in the New Zealand Secondary School Cross Country Championship. Kalani was competing against 205 other opponents that were in his grade gathering from schools all over the country. Kalani had an outstanding result of finishing 11th. This achievement lead him to being pick as one of six Under 18 boys to represent NZ in the Australian Secondary School Cross Championships Australian where he individually finished 11th overall and the team placed 3rd. Well done Kalani, let the success continue.

Sophie Young was earlier this year selected into the Nelson Womens Pines Volleyball team. She was the youngest player selected and the coaching staff saw her as a great development player. However after a strong start to the season, Sophie's talent was undeniable and she quickly went from a development player to a starting player. Her and her team qualified for division 1 at nationals last week meaning she and her team will be one of the 12 teams competing for the women's national Volleyball title. Sophie will be one of the youngest players in this division and competing against the best women volleyball players in NZ. We wish Sophie and her team the best of luck at the up and coming event!
