Exchanging Words

Wendy Riascos (Student) —

In Spanish class we did a lot of activities throughout the year, one of the most interesting activities was when we wrote letters with a school in Chile.

During this year with Covid-19 and other things, it was nice to have the experience of meeting new people and practicing our Spanish. However, this was a challenge we had to face, because trying to write and share with someone who we do not know is demanding. After a few weeks our letters were sent to Chile, we waited for the answers that could surprise us.

When the letters arrived, our expectations were high. When I received the answer to my letter, my heartbeat was high as if it wanted to get out due to the emotion. One of the interesting things about my pen pal Diego was that he is interested in being a politician. He also told me that he wanted to come to New Zealand and meet the All-Black Rugby team. I would like to meet him one day.

Here are some of the comments from my classmates:

“I liked to know how people do things in Chile and meet new people too”

“I liked being able to share my experience in New Zealand with teenagers in Chile and being able to practice my Spanish”

“I liked knowing how their lifestyles are and how the schoolwork is in Chile”

“I had the experience of talking to new people and having more followers on Instagram”

The wonderful thing about this project was that we were able to experience something that not everyone can, being able to connect with someone on the other side of the world.

Our class is looking forward to physically going to Chile, once the borders open. We will get to meet our pen pals and practice our Spanish while being surrounded in the culture.

Nos falta una foto de la clase y le pedire una a los del colegio de Chile
