Whenua Iti Adventure Courses Inspire

Andrea Hawkes —

Whenua Iti run outdoor programmes which empower and challenge students

In term one we have students enrolled in two different courses at Whenua Iti.  Learning through experience in the outdoors, they interact with students from other schools as they work toward common goals, and have the opportunity to gain NCEA credits.  These courses have been very popular and there is now a waiting list for the remainder of the year.

Environmental Sustainability focuses on conservation practices, environmental awareness and sustainability through a series of field-based, environmental activities.  Hands-on learning in this programme can inspire students with career paths into conservation, science and the environment.

The Manaaki Tapoi Extension course is for participants who have graduated from prior Manaaki Tapoi courses.  Students are immersed in the cultural history of the Top of the South.  This strengthens understanding of the uniqueness of Maori culture as well as the interconnectedness of Te Ao Maori. This term students will have a unique opportunity to support the Te Hau Kōmaru National Waka Hourua Festival based at Kaiteriteri beach.

Inā kei te mohio koe ko wai koe, I anga mai koe i hea. Tēnā ka mohio koe, kei te anga aku koe ki hea.  If you know who you are and where you are from, then you will know where you are going.

'Aotearoa Adventure' is the upcoming Whenua Iti holiday programme, 15-19 April for students aged 15-18.  The programme will include a mix of activities that could include sea kayaking, tramping, caving, rock-climbing, abseiling, camping, navigation skills, stand-up paddle-boarding.

The outcome of completing an Aotearoa Adventure is a great sense of achievement, increased confidence and the gift of a memorable experience that will be shared with new friends made along the way. You will not only discover more remote places but also your inner adventurer!  The cost is $750 for domestic students, $950 for international students.
