Debating results - Impromptu Cup

Gaye Bloomfield —

Congratulations to Stella Bloomfield & Annabel Batt!

Last weekend (4 August 2024), students from the Nayland Debating Club competed in the Impromptu Cup, a regional secondary school competition hosted by Lucy Jessop, New Zealand Schools Debating Council – Convenor Kahurangi Marlborough Region for 2024.

Stella and Annabel beat Waimea College to take the Senior Division title and win the Impromptu Cup title for 2024. The motion for the final was: This house believes that social movements should seek change through the courts rather than through legislation.

Nayland College students competing were: Stella Bloomfield, Annabel Batt, Gabby Gavin, Emerald McCartney, Kayla White, Luke Halcrow and Malachi Ng.

The format of the competition is very challenging. Teams of two have just five minutes to prepare and are then asked to speak for up to six minutes each. There were four rounds across the day.  Debates are judged via zoom with adjudicators from the Victoria University Debating Club.

Nayland College was also the host venue for the event with 13 teams from other local schools participating in the event.
